What you should know prior to hiring a marine surveyor!

Don't let this happen to you because of a negligent surveyor!
Those purchasing a boat for the first time have a lot of questions;

What is a marine survey?
Do I need a marine survey?
What's the difference between NAMS & SAMS?
Do marine surveyors have specific guidelines to inspect by?
What should I expect from a marine surveyor?

Many new boat buyers and long time boat owners alike may not realize the necessity to obtain a marine survey.  In fact, their finance or insurance company more than likely will require it.  A marine survey conducted by a qualified surveyor can save the new owner a lot of heartache and financial burden.  The question then is how do you obtain the best survey for the money.  At between $10 - $18 a foot, this can get expensive but well worth it IF the surveyor does his job correctly.

Marine surveyors hold a great deal of responsibility when conducting surveys.  We count on them to have the expertise necessary to do what we pay them for.  How do you know if your getting your moneys worth? Or if your going to have to turn around and spend hundreds or even thousands on your new pride and joy immediately after buying it because the surveyor didn't do his job correctly.  Unfortunately, most don't find out for days, weeks, or even months later and it is nearly impossible to hold these guys accountable for their stupidity or negligence.

Please provide input on your knowledge and experiences with buying, owning, and maintaining your boat.
